The skylight mounting frame is made of extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 with a minimum thickness of .093 inches and has mitered and heliarc-welded, watertight corners with integral condensation and weepage gutters.
The skylight dome is a custom designed, vacuum formed, clear, high impact lens. The preformed plastic sheet is 3/16 in. thick acrylic with a DR acri-tuff resin blend to achieve very high impact strength to prevent damage from hailstorms and vandalism, while also providing a stronger lens for fall protection.
The sun tracking mirror assembly is mounted under the clear dome on aluminum square tubing and driven by a low voltage gear motor. The motor is powered by a minature photovoltaic module, and uses light sensors to track the sun across the sky during the day. At sun-set, the motor returns to it’s eastern setting to await the next day. The mirror assembly has 4 reflective aluminum panels that are preset to redirect light from low sun angles into the light shaft. The mirrors also provide shading during high sun angles to prevent excess light levels, which could produce radiant heat.
