HARVESTING SUNLIGHT TO LIGHT COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS WITHOUT EXPENSIVE HIGH TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT BROUGHT THESE ARIZONA ENTREPRENEURS SOLAR SUCCESS
(Phoenix, AZ - OCTOBER 2022) - "Extreme weather situations can stress the power grids and cause blackouts, but if businesses can turn off their lights, many can reduce that peak power use by 20%, or more" said Bruce Bilbrey, President of Daylight America. "We harvest sunlight (solar) to bring it into buildings with just a simple system of a dome, light tunnel and diffuser. Your company can get closer to net zero carbon emissions simply by using these electric lighting conservation techniques."
Our company has evaluated the benefits and values of sunlight because we've analyzed energy consumption for daylighting systems for 30 years. As pioneers in the natural lighting revolution, we have consulted on design, sold, and installed commercial daylighting to light 50,000 million square feet for many sectors of industry and governments including all branches of the military. Our daylight units were chosen for the Texas Dyess Airbase B-1 bomber hangers to reduce energy costs and improve the light quality. Architects have won awards with our units for large facilities like schools, gyms, recreation centers, airport hangers, to reduce energy loads.
Bilbrey said he and his brother became energy market disrupters when they started offering natural light to replace electric lighting for commercial buildings in 1993. "My brother Paul and I started by designing and patenting our commercial daylighting systems as custom products because building owners wanted to turn off electric lights to save energy, reduce heat gain and offer their customers better lighting." We patented component-based daylighting systems to create a solar daylighting system that functions like electric lighting. Today you have the option of using simple systems for daylighting but also sophisticated sun tracking and hybrid lighting. We continue to design and patent new products to maximize the benefits of natural light."
Energy conscious companies such as Whole Foods, Pepsi, and Frito Lay were early adopters of using daylighting as a major solution in their energy conservation efforts. The National Renewable Energy Lab began testing our daylighting products 15 years ago to analyze them for energy savings, heat gain and lighting quality as required by major corporations. "We've always been concerned about the future of clean energy and have promoted energy conservation as a big part of the solution," said Bilbrey. "You can build all types of new sources of energy, but conserving energy through a direct use of sunlight remains the easiest, cheapest and quickest way for busines owners to get to net zero.”

FACT SHEET - APRIL 2021

What is Daylighting? Daylighting is bringing natural daylight into interior spaces with roof-mounted square/rectangular daylighting units allowing electric lighting which can be turned off completely or partially during the day. It is a SIMPLE solar solution without the high cost of investment because the components are not technically complicated, expensive or hard to install. Daylight America has completed over 50 million square feet of project space since the company was opened in 1991, saving over 100 million pounds of carbon emissions and 140 million Kwh of energy.
Types of daylighting systems:
a. Passive daylighting (skylights) that rely more on high sun angles
b. Active daylighting: solar powered mirror arrays that track and harvest low sun angle light and reflect it into highly reflective light wells.
c. Hybrid daylighting - integrating natural light with an electric lighting system to create a day lighting and night lighting system.
Clean Energy & Sustainability: Clean energy is one of the targets set by scientists to achieve climate change goals with reductions critical in the next ten years. It is calculated that commercial and residential buildings contribute up to 24% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. With over 40% of the world’s total energy use from lighting. It is an imperative that commercial buildings improve natural lighting use and reduce energy loads which can reduce emissions, while also reducing peak energy crisis for the grids that are now using coal, oil, hydro, natural gas and nuclear generation which are easily disrupted.
Daylighting in Emergencies: Energy emergencies and the loss of energy due to heat waves, wildfires, tornados, hurricanes, snow and ice put dramatic strains on the power grid which forces managers to conduct rolling blackouts. If building owners have daylighting, not only will that take pressure off the grid so energy can go to residents but allows the business to operate because they have lighting.
Daylighting Benefits Example: by installing 100 daylighting units:
*$80,000 investment *286,595 kilowatts of reduction. *Cash savings: $42,989. *Payback1.28 years *Carbon emission offset: 32,036 pounds per month
Daylighting is considered a renewable energy source by the federal government, many utility companies and normally qualifies for the Federal and State Tax incentive programs.
Federal Energy Award for Daylighting Airport Hangers: Starting in 1996 and continuing through 1998, Dyess AFB Base installed unique active and passive day lighting systems. Tom Denslow, the base Energy Manager, teamed with the manufacturer of these units, Natural Lighting of Arizona, to install over 460 day lighting systems in 16 buildings. According to the vendor who tracks day lighting installations, Dyess AFB has the largest amount of day lighting in hangars, the largest array of day lighting systems in the federal government, the largest integration of day lighting/lighting with automatic controls and the world's single largest active day lighting installation. Natural Lighting refers to Dyess AFB as the day lighting capital of America! This project won a 1999 Federal Energy Award.
History: The two Bilbrey entrepreneurs started looking for energy efficiencies through daylighting 30 years ago. They have consulted with the National Energy Research Labs, utilities experts, and energy professionals who seek new clean energy solutions to help building owners use daylighting effectively. Natural Lighting Company was created in 1991 and soon patented new types of active and hybrid daylighting systems so they could create custom-designed systems for many types of building uses such as school rooms, hallways, offices, gyms and recreation centers.
Daylighting Benefits: Turning off electricity which can be up to 40% of the utility cost for a commercial building, not only saves the owner money with modest payback and ROI, but also provides a healthier type of light that improves occupant health, reduces eye strain. Studies show increased performance in classrooms and improved sales in retail environments
Daylight America Solutions: site audits, project design, manufacturing, installation and warranty services. Some of the key components of our daylighting systems are proprietary and or patented and are only available to customers or licensed dealers. It is the most cost-efficient solar solution without a complicated solar panels or other solar conversion products. Daylighting can be contracted quickly and is normally installed at a rate of 5 to 10 units per day.
Daylight America Clients: Nationwide installations in Government, retail, commercial, manufacturing and educational environments.
Product Awards: Arizona’s State Energy Program named Daylight America one of the ten best energy projects resulting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s donations warehouse in Phoenix installed 52 solar daylighting units allowing natural light to replace the traditional lighting system.
